Ear infection

The service is designed to support patients with ear-related symptoms by providing timely clinical support, appropriate treatment options, self-care advice, and referral where further assessment is required.

Ear Health Service

The Ear Health Service provides patients with convenient access to professional support for common ear-related concerns. The service offers assessment, advice, and appropriate treatment options to help manage symptoms effectively and support better ear health.

What the Service Offers

Our service provides patients with personalised guidance based on their symptoms and individual needs. This includes advice on managing ear-related symptoms, appropriate treatment recommendations, self-care guidance, and referral where further assessment is required.

Supporting Your Ear Health

The service aims to improve access to timely care, helping patients receive appropriate support while promoting safe and effective management of ear conditions. Patients are provided with clear advice on treatment, symptom management, and steps they can take to maintain good ear health.

Treatment

We offer a range of treatment options for ear-related conditions, tailored to the severity of your symptoms. For mild cases, treatment may include self-care advice, over-the-counter remedies, and measures to help relieve discomfort. For more severe cases, further treatment may be required, which may include prescription medicines where clinically appropriate. Our experienced pharmacist will assess your symptoms, identify the likely cause of your ear condition, and recommend the most suitable treatment option to support your recovery.

Causes

Ear infections are often caused by bacteria multiplying in the ear canal, leading to inflammation, pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes discharge. Outer ear infections (otitis externa) commonly occur when the natural protective barrier of the ear is disrupted, allowing bacteria to grow.

This can happen due to moisture trapped in the ear after swimming or bathing, irritation from cotton buds or inserting objects into the ear, or damage to the skin lining the ear canal. Other factors, such as earwax build-up and skin conditions like eczema, can also increase the risk of developing an infection.

Complications

Most ear infections improve with appropriate treatment; however, if left untreated, they can sometimes lead to complications. These may include the infection spreading to surrounding tissues, worsening pain and inflammation, temporary hearing changes due to swelling or blockage, or recurrent infections.

In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, which require urgent medical attention. Seeking advice from a healthcare professional can help ensure the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment are provided.

How this service works

Consultation and ear Assessment

During the appointment, a healthcare professional will discuss the patient’s symptoms and medical history before carrying out an examination of the ear using appropriate equipment.

Personalised Advice and Treatment

Following the assessment, the healthcare professional will provide advice based on the findings and recommend suitable treatment options where appropriate.

Follow-Up Support and Referral

Patients will receive guidance on managing their symptoms, using treatments correctly, and caring for their ears. Where further assessment or specialist input is required, appropriate referral advice will be provided.
