Bacterial skin infections can present in several forms and vary in severity. One of the most common is impetigo, a highly contagious skin infection that can affect people of all ages, though it is most frequently seen in infants and children.

With the support of the NHS Pharmacy First service, treatment for impetigo can now be accessed quickly and conveniently through your local pharmacy — helping you receive prompt care without the need to book a GP appointment.

Please complete the form below and our pharmacist will arrange a call back within 2 hours.

 Impetigo Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of impetigo may include:

✓ Red sores or patches on the skin (non-bullous impetigo)
✓ Enlarged lymph nodes
✓ Fever
I✓ tchy or painful skin lesions
✓ Fluid-filled blisters (bullous impetigo)
✓ Types of Impetigo

It is important to understand that there are two main types of impetigo: bullous impetigo and non-bullous impetigo.

Bullous impetigo is characterised by the development of large, fragile fluid-filled blisters and can often be more painful or severe. These blisters may appear on various areas of the body and can burst easily, leaving the skin irritated and sore.

Non-bullous impetigo, the more common form, usually begins as small red sores that quickly rupture and form distinctive honey-coloured crusts. This type is most frequently seen around the nose and mouth, although it can occur elsewhere on the body.

Both forms of impetigo may cause itching, redness, discomfort, and irritation. The good news is that, when identified early, both types can usually be treated effectively with antibiotics and appropriate follow-up care through the NHS Pharmacy First service.

Treatment

Topical antibiotics, usually in the form of creams or ointments, are commonly used to treat impetigo. These treatments work by targeting and eliminating the bacteria causing the infection, helping to prevent it from spreading further while also relieving symptoms such as itching and discomfort.

Oral antibiotics may be prescribed in more severe or widespread cases of impetigo. Unlike topical treatments, oral antibiotics work throughout the body and can be more effective when the infection is extensive or not responding to initial treatment.

Maintaining good hygiene practices is also important to help reduce the spread of infection. This includes regular hand washing, avoiding scratching affected areas, and not sharing towels, clothing, or bedding with others. Over-the-counter pain relief medication may also help manage discomfort where needed.

In some cases, follow-up consultations may be recommended if symptoms persist or standard treatments are not proving effective. For more complex or severe infections, a referral to a specialist may be required for further assessment and treatment.

Who is at risk?

Impetigo most commonly affects young children and infants, although it can develop in people of any age. This bacterial skin infection is more likely to occur in individuals with a weakened immune system, as the body may be less able to fight off infection effectively.

The condition is also more prevalent in warm and humid environments, where bacteria can thrive more easily. In addition, people with existing skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis may be at greater risk, as damaged or irritated skin can make it easier for bacteria to enter and cause infection.

Other factors that may increase the risk of developing impetigo include close physical contact, crowded environments such as schools or nurseries, and cuts, insect bites, or other breaks in the skin.

Complications

Impetigo can lead to serious complications such as cellulitis, sepsis, and even lifelong scarring, making it crucial to seek prompt treatment and practice proper hygiene to prevent its spread.
