✓ Types of Impetigo
It is important to understand that there are two main types of impetigo: bullous impetigo and non-bullous impetigo.
Bullous impetigo is characterised by the development of large, fragile fluid-filled blisters and can often be more painful or severe. These blisters may appear on various areas of the body and can burst easily, leaving the skin irritated and sore.
Non-bullous impetigo, the more common form, usually begins as small red sores that quickly rupture and form distinctive honey-coloured crusts. This type is most frequently seen around the nose and mouth, although it can occur elsewhere on the body.
Both forms of impetigo may cause itching, redness, discomfort, and irritation. The good news is that, when identified early, both types can usually be treated effectively with antibiotics and appropriate follow-up care through the NHS Pharmacy First service.
