PHARMACY FIRST

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a common condition that can feel similar to a persistent cold, often causing symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose, facial pressure, headaches, and congestion that can interfere with daily activities. It occurs when the sinuses become inflamed, usually as a result of an infection.

Although sinusitis often improves within a few weeks, symptoms can sometimes last longer. If your symptoms persist or become troublesome, you can book a consultation with our pharmacist through the FREE NHS Pharmacy First service.

Please complete the form below and our pharmacist will arrange a call back within 2 hours.

About Sinusitis

✓ Pain, swelling and tenderness around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
✓ A blocked or runny nose
✓ A reduced sense of smell
✓ Green or yellow mucus from your nose
✓ A high temperature

Less common symptoms
✓ A cough
✓ A headache
✓ Bad breath
✓ Feeling pressure in the ears
✓ Toothache

Symptoms of Sinusitis usually improve within four weeks. However, in some cases, symptoms can last much longer — sometimes for several months. This is known as chronic sinusitis, where the condition does not resolve within the expected timeframe.

Although chronic sinusitis is uncommon, patients with persistent or recurring symptoms may require further assessment and could be referred to a specialist for ongoing treatment and management.

Treatment

Sinusitis can be managed using a range of treatment options, including over-the-counter medications, prescription treatments, nasal sprays, antibiotics, and, in some cases, surgical intervention.

Over-the-counter treatments such as antihistamines and decongestant nasal sprays may provide short-term symptom relief. However, these medicines may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with certain underlying health conditions, so it is important to speak with a pharmacist before use.

Nasal sprays and drops, including antihistamine, decongestant, corticosteroid, and saline sprays, can also help relieve congestion and sinus discomfort. Some treatments are available over the counter, while others may require a prescription, which can now be accessed conveniently through the FREE NHS Pharmacy First service.

Who is at risk?

According to the NHS, anyone can develop Sinusitis, but certain factors can increase the risk. These include:

Having a cold or upper respiratory infection
Allergies such as hay fever
Nasal polyps or a deviated nasal septum
Smoking or exposure to smoke
Asthma
A weakened immune system
Dental infections affecting the upper teeth

People with these risk factors may be more likely to develop sinusitis or experience recurring symptoms.

Complications

According to the NHS, complications of Sinusitis are uncommon, but can occur if the infection spreads. Possible complications may include:

A spread of infection to the eyes, causing swelling or vision problems
Bone infections near the sinuses
Meningitis, a serious infection affecting the lining of the brain and spinal cord
Chronic sinusitis, where symptoms persist for an extended period

The NHS advises seeking medical attention if symptoms become severe, worsen suddenly, or affect vision or breathing.
