PHARMACY FIRST

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common condition that affects the urinary system, including the bladder and urethra. It can cause symptoms such as a burning sensation when urinating, a frequent need to pass urine, and discomfort in the lower abdomen.

Most UTIs are mild and can be treated quickly, especially when identified early. Through the FREE NHS Pharmacy First service, you can now access assessment and treatment from a pharmacist without needing to book a GP appointment.

Please complete the form below and our pharmacist will arrange a call back within 2 hours.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) Symptoms

A urinary tract infection (UTI) commonly affects the bladder (cystitis) and can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. The most common signs include a burning or stinging sensation when passing urine, a frequent or urgent need to urinate, and passing small amounts of urine despite feeling the need to go.

Other symptoms may include cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower abdominal pain, and general discomfort in the pelvic area. In some cases, blood may be present in the urine.

If the infection spreads to the kidneys, symptoms can become more severe and may include back or side pain, fever, chills, and feeling generally unwell.

If you are experiencing UTI symptoms, you can access assessment and treatment quickly through the FREE NHS Pharmacy First service without needing a GP appointment.

Treatment

Treatment for a urinary tract infection (UTI) depends on the severity of symptoms. In many cases, mild infections may improve with increased fluid intake and over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to help manage discomfort.

If treatment is required, pharmacists can assess your symptoms and, where appropriate, provide antibiotics to treat uncomplicated UTIs (such as cystitis) without the need for a GP appointment.

It is important to complete any prescribed course of antibiotics fully to ensure the infection clears completely. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, further medical assessment may be needed.

Causes

According to the NHS, a urinary tract infection (UTI) is usually caused by bacteria entering the urinary system, most commonly from the bowel. The bacteria can travel up the urethra and multiply in the bladder, leading to infection.

Common causes and contributing factors include:

Not fully emptying the bladder
Sexual activity
Wiping from back to front after using the toilet
Using a diaphragm or spermicidal contraception
Pregnancy or menopause, which can increase susceptibility

These factors can make it easier for bacteria to enter or multiply in the urinary tract.

Complications

According to the NHS, most urinary tract infections (UTIs) are mild and resolve quickly with treatment. However, if left untreated or if the infection spreads, complications can occur.

These may include:

Kidney infection (pyelonephritis), which can cause fever, back pain, and feeling very unwell
Recurring UTIs (frequent infections)
In rare cases, sepsis, a serious and life-threatening response to infection

The NHS advises seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen, do not improve with treatment, or if signs of a more serious infection develop.
